Gardarika (isl. Garðaríki or Garðaveldi, the Swede. Gårdarike) — the ancient Scandinavian name of the Old Russian state used by Vikings in the Middle Ages. So named «the country of cities», possibly, meaning the Novgorod earth or a chain ancient Scandinavian fortresses from Ljubitsy and Ladoga along the river Volkhov.
